Owner Shobna Joel has re-dubbed this fine-looking creeper-clad hostelry long known as A4 Angel, the Angel Gastro Pub, which is a sure sign of her intentions to move the place forward. The location – on the A4 between Reading and Newbury – guarantees plenty of business, and the whole set up copes admirably.
Inside, the place still feels like a genuine watering hole, with stripped floors, open fires and real ales on tap, although extravagant touches such as luxuriant greenery, brightly coloured walls and serried rows of wine bottles in the rafters suggest something more upbeat.
Meals always kick off with bowls of olives in a spicy marinade, ahead of starters like a warm salad of chorizo, black pudding and poached egg or mussels steamed in a Thai broth.
