A bastion of the Leicestershire restaurant scene for more than 20 years, Ashfields is handily placed on the A47 between Hinckley and the city of Leicester. Inside, it comprises a series of light airy rooms, and the owners have recently opened up the courtyard for al fresco meals.

Seasonal ingredients show up strongly on the brasserie-style menu, which might begin with sauté wood pigeon, shiitake mushrooms and crispy bacon on a rösti or air-dried beef with wild rocket, artichokes and Parmesan.
