When it opened more than 20 years ago in Kingston upon Thames, Ayudhya was in the vanguard of restaurants promoting authentic Thai cuisine in the UK. It takes its name from the ancient capital of Siam, and the dark interior is an ethnic extravaganza including a Buddhist altar, portraits of eminent Thai personages, artefacts and superb carved woodwork.
There are no great surprises on the menu, which trawls its way through most of the now-familiar staples like satays, tum yum soups flavoured with coconut and galangal, hot-and-sour salads, curries and stir fries.
