Built in the early years of the eighteenth century on the site of a medieval tithe barn, this Bedfordshire manor house was - for many years - the country seat of the Whitbread family (of brewing fame). These days, it's a popular hotel which makes the most of a tranquil setting in three acres of landscaped grounds on the banks of the River Ouse.

The WineGlass Restaurant (formerly the Riverside) has delightful views over the water and offers an excellent modern British menu backed by a creditable wine list.
