Bay Horse Inn Review

Follow the signs for the Trough of Bowland if you are heading out to this immaculate black-and-white timbered inn: it looks, feels and behaves like a genuine country hostelry, even though it's only a few minutes' drive from the M6. Colourful window boxes grace the exterior, and inside it puts on a good show with real ales in the bar and a civilised dining room where re-invented North Country food is the order of the day.

The menu reads like an inventory of Lancastrian and Lakeland produce: Andrew Ireland's black pudding with carrot relish and mustard dressing, potted Morecambe Bay shrimps, slow-cooked Cumbrian rough fell mutton shank with goats' cheese mash, Swainson Farm duckling with prunes, elderberry wine and potato purée show the trailblazing style.

Elsewhere, aged Bowland beef is topped with Garstang Blue cheese and grilled fillet of West Coast sea bass comes with asparagus, orange and beetroot butter.
