Hidden away in a basement on the corner of Bedford Street and the Strand (hence the name), this popular rendezvous combines a retro 'wine room' and bar with a bistro and deli counter. It's the kind of place that attracts oenophiles as well as suited-and-booted types, Charing Cross commuters and trendy young things.
The food is mostly cross-Channel stuff that yo-yos between omelette Arnold Bennett and chicory and shallot tarte Tatin, via shepherd's pie, braised ox cheek with horseradish mash, cassoulet and tuna niçoise.
