Named after the family that once lived in the house, this atmospheric Grade I listed dwelling lays claim to being the oldest residence in Barnard Castle. The setting may be historic, but the place continues to do sterling service as a family-run restaurant offering food with a distinct modern slant.
Today's visitors can eat where Cromwell once dined (in a room with a crested ceiling and oak beams) although the monthly-changing menu is likely to be very different.
