Blue Bicycle Review

Tucked away down a cobbled street close to the Foss Bridge, this old building was a brothel in Victorian times. The red light is long-gone and the place now thrives as an eclectic bistro-style restaurant full of homespun charms. Downstairs there are discreet vaulted booths (once used as 'bedrooms'), and the interior is filled with busts (not the fleshy sort!), artwork and photos of some of the girls who plied their trade in days gone by.

Seafood figures prominently on the regularly changing menus, and the kitchen spreads its wings for creative dishes ranging from monkfish and caviar ravioli with watercress and scallop roe reduction to seared salmon with braised pak choi, crispy noodles and Asian pesto, not forgetting a renowned fish stew with herb-scented rice.

Elsewhere, there are seasonal ideas like home-cured venison with beetroot and apple relish, fillet of Yorkshire beef on pancetta mash with spinach purée and veal jus, plus well-crafted desserts such as dark chocolate and Griottine cherry fondant or lemon tart with clotted cream.
