There are fabulous views across Ullswater to the fells from the terrace and bay windows of this white-painted eighteenth-century inn.
The cooking has a modern British slant, with Cumbrian produce much in evidence – whether you are eating Cumberland sausages in the panelled bar or marinated chump of Lakeland lamb on a bed of goats' cheese mash with roasted pepper and olive sauce in the restaurant.
Other dishes on the nightly-changing dinner menu might include warm duck confit and spring onion salad served in a filo basket with tomato chilli jam and coriander dressing, and loin of pork with roasted Bury black pudding, apple rösti and Pommery mustard sauce followed by glazed lemon tart.
