An unlikely find on the corner of Highgate Road, opposite the green spaces of Hampstead Heath, the Bull & Last has rapidly hit the high notes since being taken over by the team from the Prince of Wales in Putney. It's still a proper pub, serving proper real ales in a proper pared-down setting, but the down-home food is what's really grabbing the headlines.
The short menu doesn't beat about the bush, but there's plenty to savour and enjoy from a list that might include potted crab on sourdough toast, cubes of deep-fried pig's head with gribiche sauce, brisket pie with runner beans, roast partridge with Savoy cabbage and all the trimmings, or whole lemon sole with purple sprouting, clams and parsley.
For afters, check out the blueberry cheesecake ice cream or apricot crumble with clotted cream.
