Ignore the plain frontage and the unpromising location down a dead-end road of terraced houses at the back end of the Glamorganshire Canal, the Bunch of Grapes at Pontypridd is a real find. Built in the 1800s as a watering hole for barge hands and local forge workers to slake their thirsts after a hot shift, it has been tastefully renovated and now has a growing reputation for its enterprising food and drink.
At lunchtime, there's hearty Welsh grub including venison faggots with pea purée and Dark-O stout jus, deep-fried whiting in beer batter, and burgers of various sorts, plus fancy club sandwiches, ciabattas and the like.
Suppertime brings more ambitious stuff with a nod to big-city eateries.
