But 'n' Ben is the old fashioned Scottish name for a rustic, two-roomed dwelling: in fact this delightfully cosy, whitewashed restaurant was once the holiday cottage belonging to a family from Dundee. It's a highly atmospheric place: you can even watch waves crashing on the craggy, weather-beaten shore from the windows of the dining room.
Arbroath is just a hop down the coast, and its fabled 'smokies' (whole hot-smoked haddock) appear in many guises on the menu - perhaps stuffed into a light pancake with a rich cream sauce or added to kedgeree.
