Cafe Bleu Review

Eye-catching canvases by celebrated artist Nikki McKay line the walls of this colourful and enduring fixture of the Newark scene. Café Bleu is ideally placed right by the banks of the River Trent and puts on a thrilling show with its contemporary flower arrangements, spiky palms, antique mirrors and deliberately distressed walls.

The kitchen's no-frills, modern way with things could produce dishes such as twice-baked smoked haddock and spring onion soufflé, roast fillet of Cornish cod with fondant potato, braised oxtail and vanilla jus or seared calf's liver with cumin-scented cabbage and sour cherry jus, while desserts might range from warm plum crumble tart to banana bavarois with chocolate sauce.

Brasserie-style lunch menus put the emphasis on casual one-dish meals and the wine list provides good-value drinking across the range.
