For more than 30 years, Cafe des Amis has been a fixture of the Covent Garden theatreland scene and is perfectly placed down an alleyway behind the Royal Opera House. It's an expensive-looking, sophisticated venue, with bold colour schemes and mini-chandeliers setting the tone in the swanky dining room.
French brasserie cooking is the order of the day, and the kitchen delivers a fulsome repertoire of dishes with a regional pedigree: pan-fried Les Landes duck foie gras with crisp celeriac rösti and quince compote, steak tartare with triple-cooked chips, and roast line-caught sea bass with chive crème fraîche, salsify and ceps, followed by apple and Calvados soufflé with green apple sorbet, for example.
