A Spitalfields success story, Canteen goes all out to fly the flag for Bulldog British food as it used to be – complete with a hefty dollop of nostalgia on the side. The place has certainly made an impact since opening, and was recently voted 'Best UK Restaurant 2007' by the Observer Food Monthly.
Wall-to-wall windows and a design makeover of communal bench tables and marble booths set the scene for a culinary time-trip back to those half-forgotten meals of yesteryear – potted duck with piccalilli, macaroni cheese, lamb and pearl barley stew, rhubarb and custard.
