From Danehill, head down School Lane towards Chelwood Common to find The Coach and Horses, a delightful Victorian country pub (circa 1847) with a pretty garden surrounded by unspoilt Sussex countryside - the views of the South Downs are splendid. The Coach & Horses still plays the part of a local watering hole serving its local community, although it has many more attractions besides and has won the Michelin 'Bib Gourmand' for five years in a row.
A little public bar with a serving hatch, a roaring fire and a big old sofa makes an ideal winter retreat, while the main bar (with a fine old brick floor and Victorian prints on the walls) leads out to a beautifully terraced area under the branches of an ancient maple tree.
