A fixture of the Burnham-on-Crouch restaurant scene since the mid-60s, the Contented Sole is now enjoying something of an upsurge, thanks to an enthusiastic new team who took over in 2007. The setting - a delightful eighteenth-century building just a stone's throw from the river - is unchanged, but the interior now has a touch of contemporary class.
Between them, the chef/owners have worked in some high-profile venues with some auspicious names including Michel Roux and Anthony Worrall Thompson, and their food has a strong local and seasonal slant.
