The fact that this heroically preserved, street-corner hostelry (known to all as 'The Goose') has been playing the gastropub game longer than most may explain why it seems to have got the balance between eating and drinking just right. It gets packed, but an easy-going, almost bohemian atmosphere prevails.
On the food front, the kitchen comes up with honest, unpretentious stuff ranging from ciabatta rolls to Thai chicken stew with coconut, Cuban burgers with jalapeño salad, gigot of lamb with Greek salad or pork chop with red cabbage, mash and broccoli, ahead of desserts like chocolate and walnut torte.
