Nestling deep in the Essex countryside, but only a few minutes' drive from Chelmsford, the eighteenth-century Duck Inn at Newney Green has been brought up to date without losing any of its original character. Hop-garlanded beams, panelling and bric-a-brac set the tone in the two rambling bars, which are linked by a showpiece brick fireplace.
Landlord Simon Edwards oversees events in the kitchen, and his duck dishes are well known in the neighbourhood; he also smokes his own meat and fish, which could appear as a mixed starter with homemade piccalilli and herb oil.
