The Falcon Review

Not much remains of the castle where Mary Queen of Scots met her fate, but the honey-coloured Falcon in the shadow of Fotheringhay's majestic church is still going strong. Formerly part of the Huntsbridge Group, it's now doing well under new local owners Harry and Sally Facer.

Inside, it still looks like a very pretty pub with pastel colour schemes, fresh flowers and prints in the bar and the handsome conservatory extension; there's also a separate Tap Bar for real ale drinkers, walkers and village darts players, plus and a glorious garden, which gets full to bursting when the sun shines.

The kitchen delivers upper-crust gastropub food with British and European influences, kicking off with pigeon and Ricotta risotto with Pecorino or char-grilled scallops with cauliflower purée ahead of roast Loch Duart salmon with cannellini bean cassoulet, breast of chicken with bubble 'n squeak or pork chop with wholegrain mustard mash, Swiss chard and salsa verde.
