Fallowfields Country House Hotel, hidden away in the tranquil Vale of the White Horse at Southmoor, is a beguiling 300-year-old country house which was once the home of Begum Aga Khan, and now seduces guests with its pastoral mood, personal hospitality and fine food.
The kitchen takes full advantage of produce from the hotel garden, which yields abundant organic vegetables and herbs including lovage and sorrel; the owners also have their own orchard, which provides quinces, medlars, mulberries and other fruit, while mushrooms are gathered from the paddocks during the autumn.
A bowl of garden minestrone makes a good way to start, or you might prefer seared Shetland scallops with black pudding, bacon and spring cabbage.
