Once the beating heart of the old Industrial Revolution, the once-derelict Holbeck district of Leeds (south of the river) is now home to the award-winning Round Foundry regeneration, and it has also spawned a cracking wine bar in what was an old brick warehouse.
Set up by two avid Leeds United supporters and restaurant entrepreneurs Shaun Davies and Phil Richardson (ex-manager of Leodis in the city), the Foundry is a place that eschews modish city-centre cool in favour of time-honoured virtues and style (think bare brick walls, a wood-panelled bar, ceramic tiles and a menu that flaunts the classics without ever seeming predictable).
The down-to-earth honesty and generosity shows across the board, from devilled lamb's kidneys, eggs Benedict and scallops with pea purée and mint dressing to lemon cheesecake and sticky toffee pudding.
