One of England's most venerable hostelries that has been welcoming tourists, travellers and even royalty for literally hundreds of years. Famous names from the past have included Charles I and William III, who would surely recognise some of the original mullioned windows, flagstoned hallways, old oak panelling and creaking floorboards that give the George much of its captivating character.
Meals in the handsome dining room - candlelit at night - are as traditionally patriotic as can be, with roasts on a silver carving wagon and splendid cheeses and puddings wheeled around on a trolley.
