Having scored a resounding hit with the Three Fishes at Mitton, Michelin-starred Nigel Haworth and co. are aiming to repeat the formula at this lavishly refurbished Victorian inn close to the borders of Lancashire, Cumbria and Yorkshire. Photos of the stars (local producers and suppliers, that is!) line the walls of the traditional bar, where real ale is also taken seriously.
Like the Three Fishes, the Highwayman's menu is not only a roll-call of local 'food heroes', but it celebrates the kind of north-country food that is every pub-goer's dream: here are plates of home-cured meats with homemade pickles, warm Flookburgh shrimps with mace butter and a toasted muffin, Herdwick mutton pudding with 'forager's' mash and black peas, and more besides.
