Proud to be Southampton's only authentic, independently owned Mexican restaurant, La Cantina has established itself as one of the friendliest and most lively venues in town, with its brand of big-flavoured Tex-Mex food, authentic atmosphere and Latino music. Rustic South American décor sets the tone, with cacti, wicker lamps, Cuban retro photos and other artefacts in the airy dining room.
The menu jets its way through nachos, enchiladas, fajitas, chimichangas and other well-known favourites, but it's also worth checking out piri-piri spiced squid with lime and coriander mayo, el cordero a la pamplona (pan-roasted rump of lamb with chorizo mash in creamy tomato sauce) and Cajun blackened salmon
From Monday to Friday, La Cantina offers great-value fixed-price lunches and early-evening deals for around a fiver (including a free soft drink): homemade chilli burgers, tortilla wraps and bowls of chilli are typical offerings.
