A serious makeover in 2002 transformed this remote country hostelry a couple of miles east of Trowbridge into a haven of smart modernity and upbeat gastro pub food. You would hardly think that the building started life as a woollen mill back in the eighteenth century: these days it looks neat and bijou with pale terracotta walls, luxuriant floral displays and candles on the tables.
The kitchen delivers a range of dishes from here, there and everywhere - so don't be surprised to find Thai-marinated salmon with cucumber salsa and soy dressing sharing the bill with chicken liver and roast black pudding parfait.
Other eye-catching possibilities could include trout and cod fishcakes with lemon tartare sauce, braised lamb shank with a haricot bean and mint casserole or roast loin of monkfish on avocado and shallot relish with roasted tomato sauce.
