Stainless steel fittings, bare floors and plate glass windows give this self-styled' salt beef restaurant, Madisons Deli in Stanmore an upbeat, almost funky feel. By contrast, the menu stays close to its roots, offering the kind of heartwarming staples that mamma might have made in days gone by.

The great Jewish Ashkenazi comforters are all to be found here: chopped liver, salted tongue and pastrami – although the legendary salt beef itself, served in copious quantities with crunchy green cucumber pickles and golden latkes, is the undoubted star of the show.

Those who like their soups packed with the soothing richness of chicken stock won't be disappointed, and there is lockshen pudding or apple strudel to finish.
