Everything about Magdalen on Tooley Street looks appetising. The original premises (formerly Fina Estampa) has been brought back to life with mirrors on claret walls and chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. Bookings are only taken for the upstairs dining room, while the downstairs is kept open for hopeful walk-ins: this is a novel way of dealing with the crowds – and it pays dividends.

A talented trio of chef/owners is behind the new set-up, and their collective CV reads like a guide to twenty-first century British gastronomy: the Fat Duck, Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons, Mandarin Oriental, the Anchor & Hope, La Trompette.
