Magpies Restaurant Review

One of Lincolnshire's gems, this Magpie nests in a 200-year-old building which has recently undergone a stylish refurbishment, leaving it decorated in warm yellows and reds to create a comfortable and mellow ambience. Chef Andrew Gilbert makes good use of local produce for a menu that is full of unexpected touches, while front-of-house is masterminded by his wife Caroline.

Modern ideas abound on the menu, which works its way through mackerel pâté with gravlax, soda bread and mango dressing or perhaps beetroot fritters in beer batter with baked goats' cheese and soured cream before fillet of Lincoln Red beef with sweet potato rösti, devilled kidneys and mustard sauce or corn-fed chicken breast on polenta with baked figs, Mozzarella and Serrano ham.

Finish with dark chocolate fondant and pistachio ice cream or something wacky like Jaffa cake pudding with Seville orange marmalade jelly and chocolate brownie ice cream.
