'Manchester is mad for Malmaison' reads the blurb advertising this branch of the exclusive nationwide hotel group. It is housed in a landmark red-brick building (formerly a Joshua Hoyle warehouse) in the heart of Piccadilly by the Rochdale Canal, and sets out its stall as a cool destination complete with a 'gymtonic' and spa.
In the brasserie, with its rich dark colours, soothing sounds and flickering candles, you can sample modern dishes along the lines of baked fillets of sardine with warm potato salad, seared duck breast with fig tartlet and creamed cabbage, and crayfish linguine with dill and fennel velouté.
If you fancy something simpler, there might also be moules marinière or the Mal burger with homemade relish and fries, while desserts could range from passion fruit pannacotta with candied orange to Manchester tart with strawberry compote.
