This is a country house on an awesomely grand scale. Built in 1830, it's a colossal baronial pile complete with its own PGA championship golf course set amid a sprawling estate not far from Hadrian's Wall.
Inside it has rooms of stately proportions – some almost the size of a small house – and formal meals are now served in the palatial setting of the Library and Print Room, where wood panelling and a huge ornate stone fireplace dominate the scene.
Clover-fed, organically reared lamb from the estate might appear with a Mediterranean vegetable timbale and basil infused jus and the kitchen is keen on local game (wild mallard breast with confit leg, cranberry and port jus, for example).
