Holding pride of place in a village of 'roses round the door' cottages, this gem of an inn was extended by Victorian superstar archaeologist and anthropologist General Augustus Lane Fox Pitt-Rivers to accommodate visitors to his museum of personal treasures. The museum may be no more, but the inn carries on in style.
Inside, it is an enticing mix of flagstone floors, roaring fires and cosy alcoves with a menu that is pitched somewhere between top-end gastro pub and modern restaurant cooking.
