A sense of rural calm and well-being pervades this wisteria-clad, eighteenth-century stone mansion in the wilds of north Devon between Umberleigh and Chedition. It is no surprise to learn that Northcote was once a retirement home for the monks of Tavistock Abbey. The prevailing mood is helped by pretty views, mullioned windows, studded oak doors and rich fabrics.
The refurbished restaurant is noted for its specially commissioned murals depicting scenes from the past, although the food is firmly in touch with the present.
