Alastair Ross spent 14 years in London working in the kitchens of the Savoy, Leith's and other venues before moving north with his wife Claire. They now run this North Country pub/restaurant (just north of the A66) with boundless enthusiasm: he's in the kitchen, she's out front working the bar, greeting customers and being the ever-helpful lady of the house.
Dinner menus and specials are posted on blackboard, the choice changes each day and the owners are keen to get as much as possible from their neighbourhood: food miles – or the absence of them – matter a great deal here.
