'Pembroke's oldest hostelry' is a 500-year-old building in the centre of town, just a few minutes walk from the historic castle. It's been owned and run by members of the Wheeler family since 1952 and a really homely atmosphere still prevails.
Snacks and real ales are the attractions in the two stone-walled, beamed bars, but the hotel's centrepiece is the George Wheeler - described as a 'fifteenth-century kitchen restaurant', complete with a Welsh dresser and grandfather clock.
The kitchen gets supplies of fresh fish each day from Milford Haven docks, and it appears in the shape of - say - hot cockles with laverbread and bacon, pan-fried fillet of salmon or monkfish in garlic and parsley sauce.
