It's well worth the trek though the Kent countryside to discover the Pepper Box Inn, a 400-year-old pub some 2 miles off the A20 near Harrietsham. It stands on high ground above the Weald, and there are splendid views all around. Inside it is as cosy as can be with standing timbers, hop-garlanded beams and a log fire blazing in the massive inglenook, plus local Shepherd Neame ales on draught.
