Peter Rosignoli gave up his job as head waiter at The Ritz to open this old-school fish restaurant Poissonnerie de l'Avenue in Chelsea: that was in 1964. Since then, the original six-table café and bar has continued to expand and is now a capacious premises spread over three town houses.
Nothing changes as the years roll by: the décor is still a comforting mix of wood-panelled walls and gilt-framed maritime paintings, and the kitchen still puts its faith in grilled Dover sole, lobster Thermidor and gargantuan 'plateaux de fruits de mer'.
Most of the fish comes from La Marée - a fishmonger's next door to the restaurant - and the choice ranges from cod and wild sea bass to scallops and langoustines.
