The setting is a big plus point at this elegant eighteenth-century country mansion with 18 acres of grounds and gardens overlooking Ullswater. Inside, you can soak up the comfort of the pastel-coloured lounge with its knick-knacks and sofas, before progressing to the luxury of the restaurant.

Proceedings begin with, say, croustade of goats' cheese with roasted peppers and pesto or roast loin of rabbit wrapped in Cumbrian air-dried ham with Parmentier potatoes and mustard dressing.
