The Refectory at St Davids Review

The stunningly renovated medieval hall beside St David's Cathedral is now home to this enterprising gastronomic venture. Ancient stone walls now blend with light beech and stainless-steel tables and above it all is a dazzling mezzanine gallery on slanted legs, filled with pottery and photographs. From the huge arched windows you can gaze across the secluded gardens or admire the newly renovated cloisters.

Local and regional Welsh produce is the kitchen's staff of life and the daily menu lists enterprising hot dishes like shoulder of Pembrokeshire lamb with roast aubergines, haricot beans and home-baked flatbread, mackerel with lemon pickle, roast potatoes and rocket, or leek and Llanboidy cheese quiche with salad and rosemary potatoes.

Little pizzas, homemade sausage rolls and all manner of sweet treats are available right through the day (try the chocolate and Guinness cake) and you can also get sandwiches filled with Solva crab, rare roast Welsh Black beef or Welsh smoked bacon.
