The Appuldurcombe Restaurant at the Royal Hotel Review

The Isle of Wight's only 4-star listed hotel is also the largest, and it stands in glorious gardens with outstanding views of the breathtaking coastline. It was reputedly once visited by Queen Victoria herself, and still has an air of gracious good living from days gone by.

Dinner in the capacious, elegantly appointed Appuldurcombe Restaurant is the main event, and the kitchen delivers carefully executed dishes with a good showing of island produce - including daily deliveries of fish from the local boats (pan-fried sea bass with mussels, lemon and herb risotto, for example).

Typical starters might include fresh pea soup with a cappuccino of smoked bacon cream while main courses could range from a classic duo of English lamb with boulangère potatoes, panaché of vegetables and rosemary sauce to pancetta-wrapped corn-fed chicken breast with sweet potatoes, wild mushrooms and truffle sauce.
