The Royalist Hotel, 947AD Restaurant Review

Claiming the title 'England's oldest inn', this venerable hostelry can trace its lineage back to 947AD and was originally used as a refuge for lepers. The Grade II-listed building still shows its ancestry with 1,000-year-old beams, a medieval frieze and 'witch's marks' etched into the ancient fireplace which holds pride of place in the aptly named 947AD Restaurant.

Past and present blend happily together, although the kitchen has its feet firmly in the contemporary world of foie gras presse, beetroot risotto, truffle oil and horseradish foam.
