Standing on the old coaching road between London and the South Coast at the foot of Box Hill, this traditional inn acquired its equine name, The Running Horses in 1828, when the Epsom Derby ended in a dead heat. Two nags – Colonel and Cadland – passed the post at the same moment, and their names are fondly remembered in the pub's two bars, which include a highwayman's hideaway and inglenook.
Formal meals are served in the dining room, which leads straight off the bar and soaks up plenty of its convivial atmosphere.
