A favourite bolt-hole for politicians, spin doctors and newspaper pundits, this bastion of all things British stands proudly within shouting distance of the Houses of Parliament. Discretion is the name of the game, and the low-ceilinged dining room is just the ticket, with partitions and pillars providing some degree of privacy for hushed conversation, plotting and deals.

Walls adorned with fine art, posters and 'JAK' cartoons depicting the exploits of founders Peter Langan, Sir Michael Caine and Richard Shepherd CBE add some zest to proceedings, while the menu focuses on true-Brit cooking of the old school with a few French accents for good measure.

Dishes vary with the seasons, but you might open your account with smoked salmon mousse, black pudding with apple and onion sauce or a bowl of green pea soup.
