Side Door (formerly the Other Place) is conveniently close to Liverpool's theatres and concert halls, and it does duty as a civilised bistro for meals before and after the show. The place itself – spread over two floors – is unshowy, and the cooking follows suit.
Wide-ranging starters such as confit dug with garlic lentils and salsa verde mayonnaise or chilli-fried squid, king prawn and wild mushroom risotto could precede roast Goosnargh duck breast with banana fritters, chermoula-marinated pork steak or roast cod fillet with spring onion crushed potatoes and red pepper pickle.
