Start the day with soft roes on toast or pikelets with jam, enjoy an Eccles cake for elevenses, otherwise call in for lunch at St John Bread & Wine set in a converted bank building opposite Spitalfields Market. There's a bakery on site, so the bread never fails and the whole enterprise has the same forthright approach to food as its elder brother, the auspicious St John near Smithfield.

Menus are pared down to the bone, but it's hard to resist the tantalising appeal of parsley soup, potted pork or plaice and fennel.
