A village pond and cottages built of Sussex flint set the scene in East Dean, a pretty village close to the South Downs Way, and the Star & Garter fits in perfectly. Dating from 1740, the pub takes its name from the coat of arms of the Earl of Richmond, the original owner of Goodwood Estate.
One novel feature of the place is its shellfish bar (open from March to October), where you can get freshly dressed lobsters and crabs, hand-carved wild smoked salmon, mussels and so on.
