Built on the site of an old monastic college, this Grade-II listed coaching inn is an enduring fixture of the Stafford scene and stands right in the heart of the town. Exposed beams, panelling and stone fireplaces still add some colour to the interior, which now includes two bars and a coffee shop as well as the highly rated, split-level Brasserie with its timber frame and stylish contemporary fittings.
Deli boards of cheese, charcuterie and antipasti are ideal for grazing; otherwise pick from the modern eclectic menu.
