Forty showrooms stuffed with antiques under one roof attract hordes of visitors to this listed Elizabethan coaching inn, which is one of those handsome ancient buildings that looks remarkably youthful for its age. Browse around the exhibits or read the papers before moving into the wood-floored restaurant, where classy food is served amid period paintings and yet more antiques (some for sale).

There's nothing antiquated about the food, which centres on big-flavoured, good-looking dishes in the modern European vein, based on wisely selected raw materials.
