An atmospheric setting down among the salt marshes, creeks and boats in Oare a little village not far from Faversham, the Three Mariners still clings to its seventeenth-century roots. Genuine Kentish hospitality is the order of the day, with Shepherd Neame ales on tap and a menu of no-frills British food based on good local ingredients.
Fish from the local day boats is a strong suit, and the kitchen makes the most of the catch for dishes along the lines of skate cheeks with lemon, garlic and parsley, fillets of red mullet with a herb dressing, roast peppers and Pink Fir potatoes - plus easy items like herring roes on toast.
Otherwise, the menu trawls its way through chicken liver parfait with spicy onion relish, herb-crusted rump of lamb, and braised oxtail with ceps and red wine (served with champ).
