Wheeler's of St James, Chequers Inn located in the village of Maresfield, on the southern edge of Ashdown Forest is Marco Pierre White's first venture outside London, for the expansion of his historic pub brand. This quintessential 18th century coaching inn has had a stylish refurbishment and the elegant rooms provide a choice of dining settings.

Quality ingredients are sourced locally wherever possible for the British menu which could start with kipper pâté with whisky and Melba toast or stuffed cabbage à l'ancienne with fresh tomato sauce might precede a Wheeler speciality of classic fish pie and buttered garden peas or honey roast belly pork Marco Polo and butter beans.

Desserts are hard to resist and tempt with the likes of Mr.
